The Astiludio Storico is a tournament that sees national flag-wavers compete in the splendid setting of Piazza dei Priori in Volterra. The tournament evokes the celebrations that took place in 1406 at the news of the fall of Pisa under Florence, then allied with Volterra.
On the first Sunday of September, at exactly 3.15 pm, the bells of the Contradas will begin to ring and the four processions from the respective gates of the city will head to Piazza dei Priori to challenge each other.
The Astiludio Storico includes a competition with the performance of each participating group for 30 minutes, preceded by the Youth Tournament competition. The participating groups compete for the assignment of the Guiderdone, a prize awarded to the group that presents the best choreography. The jury is also made up of people chosen from the audience.
