Sawdust carpets are an old tradition. In the local dialect, “sawdust” is called “chaff”. No one really knows when this tradition began. The procession of Corpus Christi is attested from the fifteenth century, but there is certain news of the carpets of flowers and sawdust only from the 800s, with the advent of the Bourbons and the splendor of their ceremonial. Since 1930, sawdust has completely replaced flower petals. The origin of this rite is a mystery that may never be revealed. But mystery goes well with this art.
The carpets of Pula in Camaiore are in fact the result of an ephemeral art. They are more remembered than seen; they are more lived than remembered. It takes a year to identify the right subject. To prepare the shapes and masks. For sifting sawdust and colouring it. Then, over the course of a long night, they are created among a thousand unforeseen events. It is impossible to take more time because the next morning the solemn procession will pass which, trampling on them, will erase them forever.
